Since its establishment in January 2014, Friends of Newington Cemetery (FNC) has functioned as an Interest Group of Grange/Prestonfield Community Council, through which its finances are managed. It comprises Community Council Members and others drawn from the wider community with an interest in Newington Cemetery.
The long-term vision of FNC is to restore Newington Cemetery to its former glory through a strategy of encouraging safer public access and engagement whilst supporting wildlife, sustainability and biodiversity. FNC co-operates with the City of Edinburgh Council as site owner and other organisations as necessary in fulfillment of its aims. FNC may undertake clearance, planting and maintenance in collaboration with CEC and other work or activities, including public events. FNC may carry out research and keep records and archives about the cemetery, its history and the history of those buried or recorded there. For more details see the FNC website www.newington-cemetery.org.uk.
The work of FNC is carried out by a Committee, Working Parties and other publicised activities. The Minutes of Committee meetings when approved will be on the FNC website. Other information will from time to time be put on the website freely accessible wherever possible. However, some information access may be restricted by copyright or personal data requirements. In furtherance of its activities, Personal Data is kept by FNC about those interested in or connected with its activities and also where there may be connections with people buried or recorded in the cemetery or associated with it.
At the CEC Culture and Communities Committee on 16th November
